5 books on my reading list

In the past I’ve never really kept a “reading list”. I’d finish a book, then go to my bookshelves and hunt for something new to read based on my mood. But lately I have actually started keeping a list of the books I’m really eager to get to. It’s not necessarily a fixed list that I insist I follow, but it’s definitely a guideline!

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron

Magic has a price—if you’re willing to pay.

Born into a family of powerful witchdoctors, Arrah yearns for magic of her own. But each year she fails to call forth her ancestral powers, while her ambitious mother watches with growing disapproval.

There’s only one thing Arrah hasn’t tried, a deadly last resort: trading years of her own life for scraps of magic. Until the Kingdom’s children begin to disappear, and Arrah is desperate to find the culprit.

She uncovers something worse. The long-imprisoned Demon King is stirring. And if he rises, his hunger for souls will bring the world to its knees… unless Arrah pays the price for the magic to stop him.

I’ve been looking forward to Kingdom of Souls for months! I would have started it ASAP but when I finally got it I was already in the middle of binging an entire series (more on that later). But this will definitely be at the top of my list once I’m done with that.

Beyond the Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.

The Blood Shrike, Helene Aquilla, is assailed on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable, while the Commandant capitalizes on his madness to bolster her own power. As Helene searches for a way to hold back the approaching darkness, her sister’s life and the lives of all those in the Empire hang in the balance.

Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.

And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias’s devotion—even at the cost of his humanity.

Reaper at the Gates is on the long-term side of my list. It’s something I definitely have my eye on, but I think I want to do a re-read and then binge the whole series. That means waiting until book four comes out!

Deathcaster by Cinda Williams Chima

On my TBR list: Deathcaster by Cinda Williams Chima

Warrior Alyssa ana’Raisa would do anything to protect her home, the Fells, and her legacy, the Gray Wolf line. But as a prisoner of Empress Celestine, Lyss is forced to turn her fearsome talents as an army commander against her beloved homeland. Refusal would swiftly lead to her death, and her death would end the Gray Wolf line.

In Lyss’s absence, Fellsmarch Castle swarms with intrigue, deception, and a primordial threat. Destin Karn, a southern spymaster with a hidden agenda of his own, might be the queendom’s only hope of defeating the forces aligned against the Seven Realms . . . as well as the enemies within the castle.

I actually did something really stupid with the Shattered Realms series that still annoys me to this day. When Stormcaster came out I thought that was the final book in the series, so that’s when I read books 1-3 in a major binge read… Well that was dumb because it turns out it’s a four-book series—NOT a trilogy. I’m not sure why I thought that in the first place, given that the Seven Realms series was also a four-book series.

Anyway, that annoyed me because at the time Deathcaster wasn’t out yet and I thought I was binging the whole series! Now, Deathcaster is finally out, but I’ve forgotten everything that happened in the other books so I’m doing a full re-read. I started with the Seven Realms series, and I’m now getting close to finishing Flamecaster. So slowly working my way back up to Deathcaster! I’m actually really enjoying this reread though. I love the whole series just as much as I did the first time.

American Royals by Katharine McGee

What if America had a royal family?

When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.

The power. The drama. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded--and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

I adore Katharine McGee! I loved The Thousandth Floor trilogy and I’m really excited to see what American Royals is all about. I love those kind of drama books.

The Third Mrs. Durst by Ann Aguirre

On my TBR list: The Third Mrs. Durst by Ann Aguirre

The Third Mrs. DurstThe Third Mrs. Durst by Ann Aguirre

Genre: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller

Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband's shadow. He controls her every move--what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she's allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are...consequences. And he has all the power.

To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she's allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script.

I didn’t love the one and only Ann Aguirre book I read (Honor Among Thieves) but The Third Mrs. Durst is completely different! It’s gotten some mixed reviews but I think it sounds creepy and awesome, so I can’t wait to give it a shot.

Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think? If not, what’s on your reading list?
